Abstract

926,760. Linkwork conveying rotary motion; toothed gearing. P. VULLIEZ. Oct. 19, 1960 [Oct. 20, 1959; May 3, 1960; June 27, 1960], No. 23228/62. Divided out of 922,247. Classes 80 (1) and 80 (3). In a mechanism for rotating a shaft 9, Fig. 3, in a fluid-tight chamber, a transfer member 12 closing the open end of a flexible bellows 6 of metal or other material sealed to the chamber wall is gyrated, without rotating, by means such as a crank-pin 11 on an external drive-shaft 22 and is coupled to the shaft 9 by a second crankpin 11 or by epicyclic gearing, rotation of the member 12 being positively prevented by a coupling 26 of Oldham type between the member 12 and a fixed cover 21. The coupling 26 comprises a disc having on its upper face a first diametral groove engaged by a guide on the cover 21 and on its lower face a second diametral groove, perpendicular to the first groove, engaged by a guide on the transfer member 12. In a modification a gyratory transfer member 12, Fig. 9, which has internal teeth epicyclically engaging a pinion 10 on the driven shaft is rotatably mounted in an eccentric bore in a rotatable driving member 11 having external teeth engaged by a driving worm 40; the transfer member 12 is held against rotation by an Oldham coupling 26 which may have needle roller beds. Where a small angular movement (rather than full rotary movement) is to be transmitted, blind crank pin bores, similar to those in Fig. 3, are formed eccentrically rather than concentrically in the transfer member so that the upper and lower ends of the bellows are coaxial at one point in the angular movement, e.g. in the mean position. In a modification of this arrangement the transfer member, Fig. 14 (not shown), which is held against rotation by an Oldham coupling has an upstanding eccentric boss in which a blind bore for the lower crankpin is provided, the boss itself engaging an eccentric bore in a rotatable driving member. In a modification (Fig. 17, not shown) a gyratory drive for the transfer member, which is held against rotation by a first Oldham coupling as in Fig. 3, is provided by the intermediate member 56, Fig. 15, of a second Oldham coupling between parallel gear rings 54, 55 driven in the same direction by a common pinion (not shown), the member 56 having a central bore (not shown) rotatably engaged by the transfer member so that the latter is gyrated as the rings 54, 55 rotate. The transfer member is coupled to the driven shaft in the sealed bellows by epicyclic gearing as in Fig. 9.
