Abstract
<PICT:0924357/IV(a)/1> <PICT:0924357/IV(a)/2> In the detection and measurement of faults, i.e. enlargements, in a running yarn (see Group IX) the path of the yarn, at one point, is adjacent to a moistened surface, adjustably spaced therefrom so as to come into contact only with faults of predetermined dimension, and then passes between two elements (one of which is connected to a voltage source) so spaced as to allow passage of an electric current therebetween when a moistened fault passes. As shown in Fig. 1, yarn drawn from bobbin 2 to bobbin 3 passes over a guide shoe 5, through a spiral of an adjustable glass fibre wick 6, moistened by water in a jar 7, between double sets of elements 9 and 10 and over guide shoe 11. In a modification, Fig. 2, a tiltable guide 18 enables the run of yarn 1 to be adjusted in relation to the surface of a sponge or sintered porous plate 19, resting on a water tank 20. A warp-end may be passed between two moistening surfaces, one of which is in contact with a water tank, Fig. 3 (not shown). The moistening surface may comprise a rotating cylinder of non-absorbent material a portion of which dips into a water bath.
