In an apparatus for measuring the electrical conductivity of a liquid wherein one electrode is movable so that the change in conductance can be measured when the electrode spacing has been changed by a known amount, the container and/or electrodes is/or are arranged so that the transverse cross-section of the path of the current through the liquid between the electrodes is constant over a substantial portion of the path, the cross-sectional area being bounded by the container over said portion. Plate electrode 14, Fig. 1, on a glass tube 10 which may be provided with inlet and outlet valves, is adjustable by a micrometer 16, and the method wherein the conductance change for a measured movement of electrode 14 is determined, serves to eliminate effects due to boundary conditions. In a modified arrangement, Fig. 2, one wire 52 of a pair of wire electrodes in a capilliary tube has a mixrometer adjustment attachment. An arrangement in which the movable electrode may have two alternative predetermined positions is also mentioned.
