Abstract

The invention comprises a compound of the formula: <FORM:0924252/IV(a)/1> in which R1 and R2 each represent an oxo group, or a hydrogen atom together with a free or esterified hydroxyl group, and R3 represents a bromine atom or a free or esterified hydroxyl group and a process for the manufacture of a 16a -methyl-21-acyloxy-allopregnane-17a -ol-3,20-dione by brominating a 21-unsubstituted-16a -methyl-allopregnane-3b ,17a -diol-20-one in an alcohol-containing solvent to which a lower aliphatic acyl halide has been added, reacting the resulting 21-bromide with an alkali metal salt of a lower fatty acid, oxidising the free 3b -hydroxyl group without isolating the intermediate product and if desired esterifying a free 11a -hydroxyl group that may be present. The bromination may be effected, for example in chloroform containing an alcohol to which acetyl chloride has been added. Specifications 924,251 and 924,254 are referred to.
