Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0944906/C2/1> (X1 is chlorine or fluorine, X2 is bromine, chlorine or fluorine, Y is H (b -OH) or O, and R is hydrogen or an acyl group) and the corresponding 1:2-saturated derivatives in which R is hydrogen, together with a process for the preparation of the 1-dehydro compounds by subjecting the corresponding 1, 2-saturated steroid having in position 17 a hydroxyl or acyloxy group to dehydrogenation in known manner, e.g. with selenium dioxide or Corynebacterium simplex, after which the resulting D 1, 4, 6-steroid may be hydrolysed or acylated at C17. Specified acyl groups R include acetate, propionate, t-butyrate, trimethylacetate, hemi-succinate, enanthate, caproate, benzoate, phenoxyacetate, phenylpropionate, p-hydroxyphenylpropionate, cyclopentylpropionate and b -chloropropionate. Four detailed examples are given.
