Abstract

The invention comprises 17-esters of 17a -alkyl, alkenyl or alkinyl-D 5(10)-estren-17b -ol-3-ones wherein the 17a -substituent contains not more than 4 carbon atoms and the esterifying acids are those of hydrocarbon carboxylic acids of up to 12 carbons which may be substituted, e.g. by methoxy or chloro, together with a process for their preparation by esterifying the corresponding 3-alkyl enol ether 17b -hydroxy compound and subsequently hydrolysing the ether group under mild acid conditions, e.g. with oxalic acid. The invention is illustrated by detailed examples. 17a -Vinyl-3-methoxy, 17a -vinyl- 3-propoxy-D 2,5(10) estradien-17b -ol are prepared by hydrogenation and 17a -propen-(1)-yl-3-ethoxy of the 17a -ethinyl (or propinyl) analogues, and 17a -propinyl -(1)-3- ethoxy-D 2,5(10)- estradien-17b -ol is obtained by treatment of the 17-oxo analogue with methylacetylene in potassium t-amylate solution.
