A device for retarding the movement of a door comprises an arm 11 pivotally secured at one end to the door frame and slidable in a block 3 pivoted to a plate 7 attached to the door, a friction member 5 wichin the block being pressed against the arm by means of a screw 9 which engage an internally screw-threaded portion of the block and can be locked by a nut 10 engaging an externally screw-threaded portion. The internal thread is of quicker pitch than the external thread so that when it is desired to adjust the screw 9 the locking action can be released by simultaneously turning the nut and the head of the screw.
