919,647. Spray nozzles. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Feb. 16, 1961 [Feb. 25, 1960], No. 6738/60. Class 69 (3). [Also in Groups XII and XXVI] A device for spraying water into the combustion equipment of a gas turbine engine for smoke abatement purposes and for thrust boosting purposes (see Groups XII and XXVI) is shown in Fig. 4. When used for smoke abatement only, water is supplied through the passage 134 and inclined passages 135 to the manifold 136, then through passages 137 to the passage 133 and finally through the orifice 138 in a swirling and atomized condition. If thrust boosting is also required, water is supplied through the outer passage 139 to the manifold 140, then through passages 141, 142, 143 to an annular swirl chamber 144, the water issuing through the orifice 145 in an atomized condition, but the atomization is less fine than that produced by the orifice 138 and the droplets will pass through the primary combustion zone without being evaporated, evaporation occurring further downstream to cool the tertiary zone.
