Abstract

916,438. Regenerating photographic fixing solutions. KODAK Ltd. Aug. 10, 1961 [Aug. 15, 1960], No. 28247/60. Class 41. An electrolytic cell for the recovery of silver from used photographic fixing solutions, at high current densities, comprises a cylindrical anode, an outer concentric cathode of flexible metal sheet constrained to form a cylinder and tangential inlet and outlet orifices communicating with the annular space between the electrodes. Fixing solutions containing soluble thiosulphates, particularly of sodium and ammonium together, and complex compounds of silver are treated electrolytically at current densities up to 25 amps. per sq. ft. to regenerate the fixing solutions and recover the silver. The cell consists of a cylindrical case 1, detachable end-caps 2 and 3 and a central core 9 fabricated from a chemically-resistant electrically insulating material. A removable thin polished stainless steel sheet 4, constrained in a cylindrical shape against case 1 constitutes the cathode; the anode 10, 11 consists of a split sheet cylinder of titanium plated with platinum on its convex surface, supported against core 9 by a circumferentially wound thin nylon cord 13. The electrolyte is injected tangentially into the annular space between the anode and the cathode via tube 14 so that the rate of flow across the cathode surface is high, due to the helical path described by the solution in moving through the cell to discharge via tube 15, thus preventing the formation of silver sulphide. Silver deposited on the cathode separates from the unrolled non-constrained stainless steel sheet in a friable form. The cell may be made of polymethyl methacrylate using polished stainless steel sheet as cathode and a rolled cylinder of 26 S.W.G. titanium sheet as anode, plated externally with 0.0001 inch platinum.
