Abstract
1319151 Glyoxylic acid BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 5 Oct 1970 [6 Oct 1969] 47199/70 Heading C2C [Also in Division C7] Glyoxylic acid is prepared by the electrochemical reduction of an aqueous oxalic acid using a mercury cathode, the cathode chamber being separated from the anode chamber by an ion-exchanger membrane as diaphragm, and in which the oxalic acid flows in a thin layer between the mercury electrode and diaphragm. The membrane may be in the form of a hollow cylinder which encloses the anode chamber and dips into the mercury cathode. The anode chamber contains 1-50% sulphuric acid in which a platinized titanium electrode is immersed and the diaphragm may be sulphonated polystyrene.
