Abstract

915,196. Mortars for firing fin-stabilized projectiles. DONNER, H. O. April 23, 1959, No. 13949/59. Classes 9 (1) and 92. A smooth-bored mortar 1 for firing finstabilized projectiles 6 has ports 9 in the rear part of the barrel 1 leading to a combustion chamber 10, the gases being directed rearwardly to the atmosphere through an annular orifice 11, thus reducing the recoil of the barrel. The breech end of the barrel which houses the fins 17 of the projectile is not provided with ports and no charge of powder is introduced into this end of the barrel, so that during firing the fins 17 are not subject to the turbulence of the combustion gases. The powder charge is introduced into the space 8 around the tail part of the projectile. The projectile comprises a lightmetal body 12, Fig. 2, a heavy metal fore part 13, a head piece 14 of thin metal and a tip 15. The charge bore of the tail tube 16 is equipped with a plug 18 and the walls of the tube are formed with holes 19 allowing the combustion gases of the ignition charge to be blown into the main charge around the tube 16. The main charge 21 comprises a tubular core filled with black powder to the extent of about ninetenths or more of the total amount of powder in this main charge and the ignition charge. The charge 22 of high explosive is of hollow form and has a space 23 for the fuse. The ignition charge is ignited by a cap and percussion charge placed in a bore 20 in the plug 18.
