Abstract
1,179,517. Projectiles. OY TAMPELLA AB. 12 Feb., 1968 [8 March, 1967], No. 6758/68. Heading P3A. Fin stabilized projectile 2, particularly a mortar bomb, is provided in the region 13 of its maximum diameter with circumferential grooves 8 which are undercut towards the nose of the projectile. The grooves may be of different depths and the grooves formed forwardly of the maximum diameter may be shallower than those behind. The grooves formed rearwardly of the mximum diameter may extend half-way along the rear part of the projectile. On firing the projectile from a barrel, the propelling gases from a cartridge (not shown) in the tail unit 4 are, more or less, trapped by the grooves 8 and converted into eddy currents which prevent passage of the following gases. The increased gas pressure over the rear half of the projectile reduces or eliminates the knocking action of the projectile in the barrel.
