Abstract

Relatively pure iron powder, prepared by contacting impure iron powder with calcium in an inert atmosphere, is mixed with a colouring agent comprising red lead or cuprous oxide and sintered at 800 DEG to 1300 DEG C. in vacuo or an inert gas such as argon to form a gold-coloured product. One or more of the oxides of Sn, Co, Mn, Cr, Fe, Ni, W or Os may also be added to the powder. In an example 0.02 kgm. of red lead (250 mesh) or a mixture of cuprous oxide and stannous oxide is mixed with 10 kgm. of iron powder, composted at 3-3 1/2 ton/cm.2, sintered at 800 DEG C. under argon and after cooling under argon to 300 DEG C. under argon and after cooling under argon to 300 DEG C. is forged. The pure iron powder is formed from 250 mesh Swedish steel powder which is reacted with calcium powder under argon in a platinum lined iron vessel. After stirring and standing for 24 hours the purified iron powder was separated by elutriation. Specification 913,198 is referred to.
