Internal combustion engine in which the air flows through at least one heat exchanger. The invention relates to an internal combustion engine in which the air flows through at least one heat exchanger before it enters the working cylinder. The invention consists in that the heat exchanger is provided with means by which the air flowing through it can either be cooled or heated depending on the operation.
The heat exchanger is expediently switched on between two stages of a compressor conveying the air. The warming resp. the cooling of the air can expediently be set automatically as a function of an operating variable of the internal combustion engine.
An example of the subject matter of the invention is shown in simplified form on the drawing. The two-stroke internal combustion engine 1 is supplied with air through the two stages 2 and 3 ... of a multi-stage compressor; the exhaust gases from the internal combustion engine drive the turbine 4. Both the rotors of stages 2 and 3, which are connected one behind the other, and the rotors of the turbine 4 are arranged on a shaft 5 that connects via a gear 6 to the crankshaft 7 of the internal combustion engine is coupled.
Between the compressor stages 2 and 3, a heat exchanger 8 is arranged through which the air flowing from stage 2 to stage 3 flows through it, ie before it enters the working cylinder of the brake engine 1. The heat exchanger is connected through connection 9. Heat carrier supplied, which can flow out again through the connection 10.
The connections 9 and 10 can be connected via the two-way organs 11 and 12 either ent either to a cold water network 13, 14 or to a hot water network 15, 16 who the. In the position of the organs 11 and 12 shown in the drawing, a connection is established via the organ 11 on the one hand between the hot water supply line 15 and the connection 9 and on the other hand between the connection 10 and the discharge line 16.
By adjusting the organs 11 and 12 by means of the lever 17, the connections shown are interrupted, but a connection between the cold water supply line 13 and the connection 21 9 and the connection 10 and the discharge line 14 is established.
At lower loads, especially when starting the internal combustion engine, hot water at a higher temperature than the air temperature is supplied from line 15 to heat the air in the heat exchanger 8, so that heat is given off to the air and its temperature is increased. Conversely, if there is a greater load from line 13, a heat transfer medium is supplied, the temperature of which is lower than the temperature of the air, so that the air temperature is lowered.
The supply of a heat transfer medium can be dispensed with in the case of medium loads. The supply of a heat transfer medium of higher or lower temperature depends on the air temperature at the inlet. in the cylinder of the internal combustion engine: this tempera ture should expediently be in the range of 100 C or slightly higher. The temperature of the heat carrier can, for. B. set so who the that the temperature of the air entering the working cylinder remains unchanged.
However, it would also be possible to control the changeover of the operation in accordance with the pressure in the air duct and the amount of fuel, the speed or the temperature of the exhaust gases. The conversion of the operation from heating to cooling or from cooling to heating respectively. the setting of the temperature of the heat carrier can, for. B.
automatically dependent. independently controlled by the temperature of the air entering the working cylinder of the internal combustion engine or the pressure in the pressure line of the internal combustion engine or the temperature of the exhaust gases from the internal combustion engine or another operating variable. will.
In principle, liquid, steam or gas can be used as the heat transfer medium. To supply heat to the heat exchanger, the steam from any steam generator, hot water, hot air or exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine is used in particular. Cooling water or cooling air can be used to dissipate heat. The heated cooling water of an internal combustion engine, for example, can serve as hot water.
In the supply line and in the discharge line from the heat exchanger can NEN switching elements, z. B. two-way organs can be used, which allow the operation to be switched from cooling to heating and vice versa in a simple manner. The heat exchanger can also be designed in such a way that separate rooms are provided for a heating medium on the one hand and for a coolant on the other hand, in order to avoid contamination of one medium by the other.
The heat exchanger 8 can also be arranged between the compressor part 3 and the internal combustion engine 1. If necessary, several heat exchangers can also be provided. Finally, the compressor parts 2 and 3 themselves can also be designed as heat exchangers, e.g. B. so that they BEZW a cooling jacket. have a heating jacket.
With a lower load on the internal combustion engine or when starting the exhaust gas turbine 4, the compressor 2, 3 is not. to drive alone, it is then from the cure belwelle 7 via the transmission 6 still the lack of power to the shaft 5 transferred. Conversely, when the load is greater to drive the compressor, not all of the performance of the exhaust gas turbine 4 is necessary;
