Abstract
911,250. Coat collars. BRITTON & CO. Ltd., ERIC. Dec. 11, 1959 [Dec. 30, 1958; Aug. 14, 1959], Nos. 41965/58 and 27882/59. Class 141. [Also in Group VIII] A laminated material suitable for making the stiffening components of garment collars comprises an under-collar layer, e.g. of Melton cloth, and a stiffening layer, e.g. of canvas, bonded thereto, the stiffening layer or both layers being cut on the bias and the stiffening layer having a yarn structure such that stretching produces a transverse curvature the concave side of which is arranged to be the under-collar layer side. The curvature is produced by warp and weft yarn twists which are in opposite senses to one another and the degree of which may be chosen to produce the degree of curvature required. The stiffening layer or both layers may be impregnated with thermoplastic adhesive and the layers adhered together with heat and pressure. Sheet material so prepared is cut into strips of widths required for collars and the strips are reeled under tension with their concave sides inwards, the reeling preserving the transverse curvature and also producing a desirable longitudinal curvature. The bias fabric may be produced by cutting a tubular fabric helically, but where strips, bias cut from flat fabric, are joined by sewing or adhesive, the layers are so chosen that the joins are concealed between the layers. In the Figure, collar components are marked for cutting from a strip very little wider than the components themselves. One of the Provisional Specifications describes under-collar and stiffening layers which (i) are bonded together only immediately before use, (ii) are bonded only in discrete areas or (iii) do not contain twisted yarns and are not necessarily cut on the bias. The other Provisional Specification states that the undercollar layer may be of unwoven fabric.
