Abstract
866,949. Flexible ducting. BAXTER, WOODHOUSE & TAYLOR Ltd. Aug. 28, 1959 [Aug. 30, 1958], No. 27899/58. Class 99(2). Ducting for air or other gases comprises at least one layer of air-impervious material, such as plastic film or metal foil, not sufficiently rigid to maintain a given shape, bonded to one or more layers of a semi-flexible, lowdensity, insulation medium, e.g. fibrous or a foam material which is capable of maintaining a given shape under the intended internal working pressure, and thereby to determine the shape of the air-impervious material, and which is sufficiently resilient to return to that shape if deformed. As shown, layers 2, 3 of glass cloth are bonded to a fibre glass mat or a sheet of polyurethane 1, the three layers being quilted together by stitching 4, and bonded to the layer 2 is a layer 5 of metal foil, e.g. aluminium, or alternatively, a coated layer of woven fabric or a layer of synthetic plastic film. The tubular body formed from these layers is surrounded by a layer 6 of glass wool and a layer 7 of polyvinylchloridecoated textile fabric. In' alternative constructions, the foil or film layer 5 is replaced by a sprayed or brushed-on impervious layer. When metal foil is not used, for the purpose of dissipating static electric charges, one or more continuous metal elements is or are provided in or on the insulating material ; alternatively, there is provided a sprayed or brushed-on metallic layer, or the quilting stitches 4 are of a metallic thread. To facilitate the joining of lengths of ducting, the layers 1, 2, 3 are extended beyond the layer 6 and the layer 7 is folded down over the ends of the layer 6.
