Abstract

910,859. Making electrical contact elements; forging; extruding. GIBSON ELECTRIC CO. Nov. 30, 1960 [Dec. 1, 1959], No. 41185/60. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). An electric contact having a body of one material 23 and a contact facing of another material 20, is made by inserting a block 23 of the body material, Fig. 4, into a block of the facing material 20 and interlocking them together. A block of silver 14, Fig. 2, preferably of circular section, is inserted in a die 11, backed - up by a piercing punch 13, and then moved relatively towards an anvil die 10 which upsets the end 16 whilst the other end is pierced and backwardly extruded by punch 13. Anvil 10 is then replaced by recessed anvil 18, Fig. 4, a block of copper or steel 23 is inserted within the pierced bore, and the two dies 11, 18 are closed together whilst the block 23 is pressed axially by punch 29 to further upset the end 20 and interlock the two blocks. Cold welding may also take place. The block 23 may consist of a copper cone surrounded by a nickel sleeve, Figs. 4a, 4b (not shown). In another embodiment, Figs. 9-15 (not shown), the recess for the head is formed in the die 11. The contact material 20 may extend only partially along the length of the contact, Figs. 7, 8 (not shown), The operations may be performed in a rivet upsetting machine having a cut-off and transfer mechanism.
