909,222. Cigarette-making machines. MOLINS, D. W., and MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. Nov. 6, 1958 [Nov. 7, 1957]. No. 34725/57. Class 130. [Also in Group XXX] The hopper 3 supplying carding rollers 1, 2 is fed from a container 10 by a conveyer 11a 11b, driven at its normal driving speed by a main drive motor 41, the conveyer speed being increased by an additional independent driving means 42 when the tobacco level in the hopper, sensed by a detector 31, falls. The conveyer 11a, 11b comprises an endless belt conveyer with chains 19, Fig. 2, connected by bars 21 carrying projecting ribs 24 which dig into the tobacco and carry it along to a shoot 14 leading to hopper 3, the ribs also having a turning action on the tobacco in container 10 which is assisted by ribbed rollers 16, 18. The conveyer 11a, 11b is driven continuously at a relatively low speed by the motor 41, Fig. 4, the drive of which is transmitted through a freewheel device 56. When the height of tobacco in the hopper 3, as detected by a roller 31 carried by a lever 33, drops below a predetermined level, lever 33 actuates a micro-switch 39 to bring into operation a second motor 42, Fig. 4, which drives the conveyer 11a 11b at a faster speed until the level in hopper 3 is restored. The motor 42 is connected to a driving sprocket 29 of the conveyer 11a, 11b through a second freewheel device 64, the first freewheel 56 being over-run when the motor 42 is in operation.
