Continuous sheet material such as a loosely coherent web of fibre is fed by an endless conveyer 1 running at a constant speed on to an endless conveyer 10, the speed of which varies cyclically between the speed of the conveyer 1 and the speed of a third conveyer 11. A slide 24 carrying rolls 4 and 5 of the conveyer 1 and rolls 8 and 9 of the conveyer 10, is reciprocable to the left at the same speed as the conveyer 1. Later in the cycle of the apparatus it is returned to the right by the action of a jack 27. In operation, the material is fed by the conveyer 1 under a cutting apparatus 28 carried by the slide 24. When the speed of the slide equals the speed of the belt 1 the cutter severs a piece of material. The belt 10, which up to this time has been running at the speed of the belt 1, is accelerated to the speed of the belt 11. This separates the piece from the main web and feeds it to a press 41 above the belt 11. The latter is brought to a standstill when the press 41 is operated. The belt 10 may be driven by respective ratchet drives from the drives of the belt 1, 11 so that it is driven by whichever of the belts 1, 11 is running at the faster speed.
