Abstract

A polypyrrolidone solution is made by mixing polypyrrolidone and a solvent containing about 5 to 50% by weight of water based on the total weight of the solvent, and about 95 to 50% of phytic acid, the water-soluble alkali metal acid salts, the alkaline earth metal acid salts or the mixed alkali metal and alkaline earth metal acid salts of phytic acid and subjecting the mixture to a temperature in a range of from 5 DEG C. up to the boiling point of the mixture to form a homogeneous mixture. Specified phytic acid salts are lithium acid phytate, potassium acid phytate, sodium acid phytate, strontium acid phytate, calcium acid phytate, magnesium acid phytate, lithium calcium acid phytate, sodium magnesium acid phytate, sodium potassium acid phytate, lithium strontium acid phytate, lithium potassium acid phytate, lithium sodium acid phytate, lithium magnesium acid phytate, potassium strontium acid phytate, potassium calcium acid phytate, potassium magnesium acid phytate, sodium strontium acid phytate, sodium calcium acid phytate, calcium strontium acid phytate, magnesium strontium acid phytate and calcium magnesium acid phytate. The preferred polypyrrolidones are made by the processes disclosed in Specifications 858,041 and 908,772. In the examples, polypyrrolidone made by reacting pyrrolidone in the presence of:-(I) sodium hydride and titanium tetrachloride; (II) sodium hydride and aluminium chloride; (IV) sodium hydride and stannic chloride, and (VI) sodium hydride and antimony pentachloride, the resultant polypyrrolidones being dissolved in mixtures of water and (I) to (V) and (IX) phytic acid and (VI) to (VIII) calcium acid phytate.
