Abstract

Sodium fluoaluminates having a predetermined NaF/AlF3 molar ratio in the range of 1.67: 1 to 2.65: 1 are prepared by mixing in the absence of potassium ions an aqueous solution containing two of the ions sodium, aluminium and fluoride with an aqueous solution containing the remaining ion, to obtain an aqueous slurry, the reactants being employed in such proportion that the sodium gram ion: aluminium gram ion ratio is equivalent to the predetermined NaF/AlF3 molar ratio of the sodium fluoaluminate to be obtained and that the quantity of fluoride gram ions is at least stoichiometrically equal to the total sum of sodium and aluminium gram ions, and heating the slurry for a time sufficient to obtain a completely reacted sodium fluoaluminate. The first solution may be of fluoaluminic acid and the second of sodium chloride, or the first may be of aluminium and sodium chloride and the second of hydrofluoric acid. The product is a mixture of cryolite (Na3AlF6) and chiolite (Na5Al3F14). In Example 1, a solution of HF and AlF3 is mixed with a sodium chloride solution to give a slurry maintained at 50 DEG C. for one hour and a product comprising 79.3% cryolite and 20.7% chiolite. Examples 2 to 4 are similar, while in Example 5 the solutions are of HF and of a mixture of NaCl and AlCl3.6H2O, the product comprising 1.8% cryolite and 98.2% chiolite.
