Abstract

Tantalum powder is produced from a bath of molten potassium fluotantalate at above 800 DEG C. by reduction with molten sodium, the latter being fed to the surface of the bath at a rate exceeding one pound per square foot per hour; sufficient agitation is employed to prevent any substantial stratification of the fluotantalate and the by-product salts. A suitable form of apparatus is described in which a propeller rotating in a horizontal plane is employed in conjunction with vertical baffles to produce circulation of the bath. The products of the reaction are leached successively with solutions containing sulphuric acid and aluminium sulphate, hydrofluoric acid and hydrogen peroxide, and sulphuric acid.
