907,715. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. Nov. 18, 1958 [Nov. 19, 1957], No. 35951/57. Class 103 (1). In a spot-type disc brake the hydraulic cylinders 15 are inclined at a small angle to the axis of the brake disc 11 and the caliper housing 10 is mounted in such a position that the outer ends of the cylinders are at a higher level than their inner ends so that air in the system will accumulate at the outer ends of the cylinders from which it can be removed through bleed passage 16 and bleed nipple 17. Instead of the caliper housing being formed as a single casting, as shown, it may be formed in two halves bolted or otherwise secured together, the division being substantially in the central plane of the disc. The friction pads 12 are bonded to steel backing plates 13 which are guided in the caliper for movement towards and away from the disc and the abutments for the backing plates which take the braking torque are parallel to the axis of the disc. A flexible bellows seal 19 is provided between each piston and the inner end of its associated cylinder as shown in Fig. 2. Specifications 742,338 and 801,805 are referred to.
