Abstract

943,838. Disc brakes. D.B.A.S.A. Dec. 21, 1959 [March 4, 1959], No. 43286/59. Heading F2E. A spot-type disc brake comprises a disc 2 rotatably secured to a wheel or other element R, a floating stirrup member C straddling the disc and actuator means such as a fluid pressure piston and cylinder device D, 20 carried by the stirrup member C for applying brake linings E1, E2 against the opposite faces of the disc, wherein the brake linings E1 and E2 are carried between the two arms 12, 12a of a fixed support member B bolted to a non-rotatable support member such as an axle a. Brake linings E1, E2 are of such a shape and circumferential expanse that they protrude at both extremities beyond the stirrup member C and abut with their edges 28, 28a against the inner flanks 18 and 18a of the arms of the support B and are carried thereby. When oil under pressure is supplied to the cylinder 20, the piston 21 thrusts the lining E1 against the disc A whilst the other lining E2 is likewise urged against it by the reaction exerted against the cylinder 20 and through the latter against the body 16 of the stirrup member. The braking torque is applied directly by these linings E1 and E2 to the support B and through the latter to the axle a without the stirrup member participating in this transmission. Devices F for locking the stirrup member C in the support B comprise two angle pieces 31 secured to the support B by means of screws 32. The radial flange of each of these angle pieces fits into the space j between the stirrup member and the yoke and thrust against the linings E1 and E2 (Fig. 4). The locking devices F, when removed, facilitate easy removal of worn linings for replacement purposes. The disc 2 is provided with cavities 6 which allow easy access to securing bolts d, introduce a certain degree of flexibility, and enable ventilation of the brake for cooling purposes.
