Abstract

828,961. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. July 10, 1958 [July 11, 1957], No. 21978/57. Class 103 (1). In a spot-type disc brake of the kind in which the friction pads can be inserted and removed through an opening in the radially outermost side of the calliper as disclosed in Specification 742,338, the friction pads are mounted on rigid backing-plates; the inner portions of the end edges of the backing-plates being of partcircular outline and engage with complementary abutments of part-circular outline at the ends of the recess in the calliper. Fig. 4 illustrates a spot-type disc brake in which there are two segmental friction pads 21, 22 bonded to each backing-plate 23 and there are two circumferentially-spaced hydraulic cylinders 24, 25 in each limb of the calliper for urging the friction pads into engagement with the disc 26. The inner part of each end of each backing-plate is of part-circular outline, as shown at 27, and engages a complementary part-circular abutment 28 in the calliper concentric about the axis of the adjacent hydraulic cylinder. The friction pads and their backing-plates are slid into the open outer end of the calliper and are retained by a single central transverse pin 29 which is readily removable to allow new pads to be fitted.
