Abstract

907,056. Collapsible spindles. ALUMINIUMINDUSTRIE-A.G. April 19, 1960 [April 23, 1959], No. 13675/60. Class 100 (1). [Also in Group XXII] An expansible mandrel has gripping members 3 which are expanded radially to grip a coil of strip 9 by air under pressure supplied to pockets formed between inner guides 4 and the gripping members 3. The pockets may receive inflatable flexible bags 5 connected to tubes 8 for the supply and exhaust of air. An air supply pipe 15 has a valve 7, while an air discharge pipe 16 has a valve 7<SP>1</SP>, both pipes communicating with a space 14 into which the tubes 8 open. The gripping members 3 are surrounded by coilsprings 11. Outward radial movement of the members 3 is limited by flanges 17 on rings 10 which surround the shaft 1 (not shown) and projections 18 on the members 3. The bags 5 may be omitted if the mating surfaces of the members 3 and guides 4 are a close fit.
