[Also in Group XXVI] A rubber &c. lip-type seal is made by holding the seal blank in a lathe, cooling the blank by supplying liquid coolant thereto and machining it to size whilst controlling its temperature by thermo-responsive means. The coolant may be cooled by heat exchange with solid carbon dioxide and the controlled temperature may be, for example, - 80‹ F. The cutting tool has a rake angle between 20 and 30 degrees and a clearance angle between 15 and 25 degrees.
