Abstract

784,504. Machine-tool details. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Oct. 7, 1954 [Oct. 13, 1953], No. 28163/53. Class 83 (3). A method of machining metals consists in carrying out the operation at a rate sufficient to heat the work at the cutting-zone to at least a forging temperature while cooling only the tool by a liquid medium. The cooling liquid may be carbon dioxide or liquid air, directed at the tool but away from the work through a fine jet of from 0.007 inch diameter upwards. Coolant may also be supplied through passages in the tool or through sintered metal by which a carbide or ceramic tip is secured to the tool. A solenoid-operated valve controlled by the machine cuts off the coolant supply when machining is not in progress. Some of the coolant may be deflected or a second jet may be provided to cool the machined surfaces of the work. A cut of “ Î 0.015 inch may be taken at 500 1/min or higher on a workpiece of nickelchromium-molybdenum steel. Specification 760,812 is referred to.
