Abstract

1,242,100. 2,2,4 - Trimethyl - 3 - hydroxypentanol. BADISCHE ANILIN & SODAFABRIK A.G. 30 Dec., 1968 [29 Dec., 1967], No. 61627/68. Heading C2C. 2,2,4 - Trimethyl - 3 - hydroxy - pentanol is prepared by dimerizing isobutyraldehyde in the presence of a basic ion exchanger at a temperature of from 35‹ to 80‹ C. It is preferred to use ion exchangers having tetra-akylammonium or trialkylhydroxyalkylammonium groups, and to use these in the carbonate form. The process may be carried out continuously or batchwise. Temperatures of from 50‹ to 70‹ C. are preferred and the reaction is preferably carried out in an inert atmosphere.
