Abstract

H2S and SO2 are removed from the exit gases from a Claus kiln, by oxidizing a proportion of feed gas, drawn from the main stream passing to the Claus kiln, to convert the H2S to SO2, and feeding the oxidized gas into the main exit stream adjacent to the inlet of a gas washing tower in order to adjust the molar ratio of SO2 : H2S to 3 : 1. The washer removes all the H2S by means of an aqueous solution of NH3 in the washer, H2S and SO2 and water react together so that the gases are absorbed in the form of thiosulphate.
