Materials for purifying. - Gases are purified, with the recovery of sulphates and sulphur, by converting the hydrogen sulphide into sulphur by catalytic oxidation, and bringing the hot gases produced into contact with a liquid containing thiosulphates. The cooled gases are passed to a second scrubber and treated with some of the liquor from the first scrubber, and a liquid rich in sulphates and sulphur is obtained. Additions of hydrogen sulphide and ammonia may be made to the second scrubber to give a liquor of suitable composition for conversion into sulphates and sulphur. If the hydrogen sulphide content is low, the gases may be scrubbed with liquid containing ammonium sulphite and bisulphite or polythionate and the liquid obtained, which then contains thiosulphate and polythionate, treated with a current of gas, part of or separate from the first, in which the hydrogen sulphide has been oxidized to sulphur dioxide, which is washed out, in the presence of sufficient ammonia, forming ammonium sulphite and bisulphite or polythionate. This is used for scrubbing the other current. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 307,903.
