Abstract

Kiln gases contg. S cpds., e.g. H2S, SO2, COS and CS2, are treated by (a) catalytically oxidising the cpds. to SO2 and then to SO3; and (b) absorbing the SO3 with water and aq. ammonia at 50-120, pref. 70 degrees C, at 1-4, pref. 1 atmos. and at a NH3:SO3 ratio of =2:1. The effluent from (b) is concentrated and treated with a reducing agent at high temp. to yield gaseous SO2. The NH3 and SO2 from this stage can be treated with H2S to yield S which is recovered, and NH3 which is recycled to (b).
