A steel, which may be used for sheathing fuel elements in a nuclear reactor, contains in percentage by weight: .C.up to 0.07 .Mn.0.5-1 .Si.0.25-0.75 .Ni.24-26 .Cr.19-21 .Nb.0-0.75 .or. .Ti.0-0.5 .Fe.balance The carbon content not exceeding 0.03% when niobium and titanium are absent. For nuclear applications the following impurity maxima should not be exceeded: .S.0.02 .P.0.02 .B.0.001 .Co.0.015 .Ti.0.05 .Zr.0.05 .Al.0.05 .U. 1/2 part per million
