Abstract

905,123. Electric flow heaters. ECKERFELD, A. Dec. 12, 1958 [Dec. 14, 1957; April 8, 1958], No. 40100/58. Class 39 (3). An electric continuous flow heater for water comprises a body 1 of electrically-insulating plastic which accommodates a heating unit having heating coils 11 located in channels 10, 10<SP>1</SP> formed in a ceramic support member 7. An end plate 8 and the member 7 are removable from the body 1 to permit cleaning or exchange of the heating coils. A water supply passage 4 is connected to a chamber 15<SP>1</SP> adjacent a diaphragm 15 and an adjustable throttle screw 16 passes into the passage 4. Upon supplying water to the passage 4 from an inlet 2, the pressure created in the chamber 15<SP>1</SP> causes a current supply switch 13 to be operated and the heating coils to be energized. The water flows from the passage 4 via a recess 5<SP>1</SP> into the channels 10, 10<SP>1</SP> containing the heating coils, the heated water then passing via a further recess 5<SP>11</SP> into a discharge passage 6. Instead of the channels 10, 10<SP>1</SP> being longitudinally slotted, Fig. 2, they may be completely cylindrical, Fig. 3 (not shown). A modification, Figs. 4, 5, 7, is adapted for use with a three-phase mains supply and has two removable heating units 40, 41, each having three channels containing starconnected heating coils. Switch contacts 44, 45 are normally spring-held in the off-position but are moved to the on-position by diaphragmoperated transmission members 48, 49 when water is supplied at inlet 33. The member 48 may be locked in its off-position when only one heating unit is required to be energized. In a further modification. Fig. 11, heating unit 80 is detachably mounted on a body 62, and resilient washers provide watertight seals where the water passes between the unit and the body. One of the seals 84 has an aperture of a size to act as a restrictor to the water flow. Contacts 86 are operated by a pressure-actuated diaphragm (not shown).
