In a water-closet assembly comprising a bowl 20 with a bottom outlet normally closedoff by a valve 22 which is intermittently operable to be open to discharge the bowl and a mechanism 31 to control the operation of the valve 22, so as to open it and reclose it after the lapse of a predetermined period of time, the mechanism 31 is powered by a vacuumdriven motor 32, 33 having a displaceable element 32, the outlet being connectible through a waste conduit 23 to a source of vacuum at 25 for discharging, and between the initiating member 37 and an actuating valve 72 in the vacuum conduit 95 to the motor is a movement-transmitting mechanism for opening the valve 72 by permitting operation of the member 37 only when the element 32 occupies a position corresponding to the closed position of the valve 22. In the form shown the mechanism 31 also controls through a valve 27 a supply of pressurized water for flushing the bowl 20. The movement-transmitting mechanism comprises a lost-motion connection controlled from the motor 32, 33 to be effective only when the displaceable element 32 is in the said stipulated position. It may comprise a substantially horizontal link 103 articulated at one end to the actuating valve 72 and at the other end to a vertically displaceable element 108 occupying a lower-limit position when the element 32 occupies a position corresponding to the closed position of the valve 22, and initiating handle 37 being vertically displaceable between two limit positions and connected with the link 103 by a lost-motion connection whereby the handle 37 engages the link 103 to tilt it only when the element 108 occupies the lower-limit position.
