In a water-closet assembly comprising a bowl 20 with a bottom outlet normally closedoff by a valve 22 which is intermittently operable to be open to discharge the bowl and a mechanism 31 to control the operation of the valve 22, so as to open it and reclose it after the lapse of a predetermined period of time, the outlet is connectible through a waste conduit 23 to a source of vacuum to promote discharging and the mechanism 31 is associated with an interlocking device influenced by the vacuum existing behind the valve 22 so as to prevent initiation of the mechanism 31 if the vacuum is less than a predetermined value. The mechanism 31 also controls a supply of pressurized water through a valve 27 to flush the bowl 20, is power-driven and is initiated manually by a knob 37. In one form shown, Figs. 1 and 8, the interlocking device comprises a cylinder 75 in a valve device 35 connected to the waste conduit 23 (through a pipe 34) in which slides a piston 74 associated with an interlocking element 73, drawn into the cylinder 75 against the action of a restoring force into a position in which the interlocking element 73 is inactive when a sufficient vacuum is reached in the conduit 23. The mechanism 31 is associated with a fluidoperated motor 32, 33 started by opening an actuating valve 72 in the fluid-supply conduit 34 thereto, the interlocking element 73 in its active position locking the actuating valve 72 positively in the closed position and closing off the conduit 34. In another form, Figs. 9 and 12, a separate conduit 95 is connected between the tank 25 and a modified control valve device 96 acting to evacuate the cylinder 33. To block the valve device 96 should the vacuum behind the valve 22 decrease below a predetermined value, a pressure-responsive mechanism 97 is connected with the waste conduit 23 through a pipe 98. The manual operating means for initiation is also modified, a knob 37 being on a spindle 97, joined to a lever 103 attached at one end to an extension 106 of the spindle 107 of the valve 72 and at the other end to a rod 108 which is part of means whereby the mechanism 31 will not operate unless the valve 22 is closed. The mechanism 97 comprises a cylinder 113 receiving a plunger 114 associated with a control rod 115 entering a hole 116 in the extension 106 with a low vacuum to lock the valve 72, assisted by an attached frame member 117 and a weighted wire 118.
