A splicing yarn feeder is moved into and out of active position intermittently during rotary knitting to feed the yarn to the needles around a part only of the knitting circle of a circular machine by mechanism which can be interrupted so that the yarn guide remains in active position continuously during reciprocating knitting of the heel and toe of a stocking.
