Steel or synthetic resin pipes 10, which conduct hot water to space-heaters 11, have an inner diameter of 5, 6, 8 or 10 mm. and the flow induced within them by a pump 7, which may be at the outlet of a hot-water tank 1 or, as shown, at its inlet, is said to be laminar. As shown, steam from a boiler house common to a number of flats passes via pipes 4, under the control of a temperature-sensing element 13, through the heat-exchanging tank 1 in which the space-heating water for a flat is heated by the steam and in turn heats a draw-off supply in a unit 2. The steam passes through a heatmeter 6. Heating may be controlled by switching the pump on or off or by by-passing the tank 1 by means of a valve 15 operated according to the temperature of the water in a distributer 9.
