900,675. Printing-surfaces. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG - NURNBERG A.G. Dec. 10, 1959 [Dec. 11, 1958], No. 42042/59. Class 100 (2). In apparatus for casting and boring stereotype printing plates there is incorporated a printing mechanism with interchangeable printing elements for printing identification marks on each plate. As shown, a stereotype plate 1 emerging from a boring box 2 towards a cooling box (not shown) has numbers printed thereon by printing elements situated in recesses 11, 12 in a disc 9 secured to a roller having a rubber tyre 10 which is driven by friction from the moving plate 1. The disc and roller are rotatably mounted on a pivot 6 in a spring-urged arm pivoted on a bracket 5 fixed to the boring box 2. The printing elements may comprise number printing plates each consisting of a metal base and numbers, made from soft rubber, felt, or plastic material, secured thereto, and are held in dovetailed slots by springs. In a modification, the printing elements may have conical studs which engage holes in the disc periphery. A cylindrical felt pad 15 impregnated with marking ink engages the printing elements as the disc 9 rotates. The numbering device may be provided between the casting apparatus and boring apparatus, or between the cooling apparatus and conveyer belt which delivers the plates therefrom.
