Abstract

899,649. Controlling aircraft. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND) Ltd., S. Dec. 15, 1960 [Jan. 20, 1960], No. 2075/60. Class 4. [Also in Group XXIX] A servo system for operating an aircraft elevator 1, under either manual or automatic control comprises a cylinder 5, connected to the elevator, housing a piston secured by a rod 6 to the air frame 7. Two control valves 8, 12 mounted on the cylinder are hydraulically connected to a two-way changeover valve 14 which connects pressure and exhaust lines a, b to one or other of the valves in accordance with the control of a solenoid 19. The control valve 8 moves the elevator in response to movements of a manually actuated control member 2, while the control valve 12 is operated to move the elevator by a signal from an automatic pilot 3. When the solenoid 19 is energized the changeover valve 14 connects the lines a, b to the valve 12 and the elevator is under the control of the automatic pilot 3. Movements of the cylinder 5 move the control member 2 through a lost motion connection formed by stops 17, 18. If at any time the control member is moved with sufficient force, a spring strut 10 in the rod 9 incorporates a switch to de-energize the solenoid so that the valve 14 moves to the position for manual control. In the event that the switch in strut 10 fails, the lost motion stops 17, 18 operate a spring arm 15 to actuate the changeover valve.
