Abstract

A fluid pressure actuated braking apparatus of the kind referred to in the specification comprising an actuator unit consisting of a pair of end-to-end coaxial cylinders, a piston in each cylinder, and an operating stem extending coaxially to the set of cylinders and which has an operational connection with a tandem main cylinder whose forces are transmitted independently and respectively to the two sets of brakes to be operated, and means to supply compressed air or vacuum to the two actuating cylinders from independent sources and low control of common actuated valve means, the operating stem being spring loaded to the inoperative position and having two pistons merely contacting surfaces on the stem such that they are capable of independent movement and their combined thrust is normally transmitted to the main cylinder while a fault or air pressure section or in the vacuum section causes only one piston to move the operating rod to drive the main cylinder with reduced thrust.
