Abstract
899,328. Heat exchange apparatus. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Sept. 9, 1959 [Sept. 10, 1958], No. 30785/59. Classes 64(2) and 64(3) Heat is transferred between two fluid streams f 1 f 2 flowing one on each side of a separating wall 2 by a plurality of Perkins tubes each of which extends through the wall and into both fluid streams and includes a horizontal or substantially horizontal part containing liquid, extending into one fluid stream, and an upwardly inclined part substantially free of liquid, extending into the other fluid stream. In an arrangement described for heating air by means of hot combustion gases, the length of those portions of the tubes extending into the gas stream may be different from the length of the tube portions extending into the air stream and may be such as to obtain a tube metal temperature sufficiently close to that of the flowing combustion gases to inhibit corrosion. In addition, the ratio of these lengths can vary according to the position of tube in the gas and air passes. In the form shown, the tube consists of a horizontally extending relatively thick-walled part 5 extending into the gas pass 3 and made of a corrosion resistant material such as cast iron, and an inclined relatively thin-walled part 6 of a cheaper material extending into the air pass 4, both parts being provided externally with fins. The heat transfer liquid is preferably water.
