Classes 64(1) and 64(3) In apparatus for heat exchange between two fluids, a plurality of transverse baffles 5 each having one or more apertures 7 therein with the apertures in adjacent baffles relatively staggered, provide a tortuous path for one of the heat exchanging fluids flowing through an annular space between inner and outer shells 1, 4, the other heat exchanging fluid flowing through tubes 3 extending through the annular space but not into the baffle apertures. The tube-free space within the inner shell may form part of the tortuous path for the fluid flowing over the tubes (Figs. 10 to 12, not shown). The heat exchanging fluids may comprise liquids, or air may be passed over the tubes to be heated by hot gases flowing through the tubes as for example in Fig. 14 in which the gases from a burner 21 located at the upper end of the inner shell are directed by a return header 22 into the tubes (not shown).
