Abstract

899,044. Treating timber. STUBBER, J. H., ROWLAND, L., and PLESS, J. H. April 6, 1961 [April 12, 1960], No. 13061/60. Class 140. [Also in Group XIII] A process for treating timber comprises the simultaneous application of radio frequency dielectric heating and the passage around the timber of a controlled heated atmosphere, in which process the dielectric heating is applied at regular time intervals and the atmosphere is abruptly changed from a dry or a substantially dry to a humid atmosphere at regular time intervals. Timber to be treated is positioned in a kiln between electrodes 24, 25 connected to a high-frequency generator (not shown) and air of controlled humidity is introduced into the kiln through an apertured false floor 17 from a duct 19 having a steam injection pipe 20 regulated by a valve 21 and removed through a duct 22 by a fan (not shown). The upper electrode 24 is mounted on a lid 16 of the kiln through which the timber is introduced into the kiln and the lower electrode 25 is carried by a gallery 23 on the floor 17, the timber being in two layers which are separated by a grid 28 and grids 29, 30 are located between the electrodes and adjacent layers of timber 26, 27. The generator operates at predetermined intervals and at similar intervals the air in the kiln is abruptly exhausted and replaced by fresh air with added steam so as to continually surround the timber with a heated atmosphere of abruptly-changing humidity. Two or more kilns may be utilized using a single generator and instead of the lid 16 suitable loading and unloading apertures may be provided in the end walls of the kiln.
