Abstract

In an apparatus for drying moist granular material, the material and a drying medium are introduced into a vessel so that the medium passes through the material and leaves the vessel through a filter arrangement. In an apparatus for drying batches of granular material M, Fig. 1, the material is introduced to a vessel 10 at 11 and a drying medium e.g. nitrogen, heated by a gas burner 18 in an exchanger 16 is introduced under pressure through a conduit 23 and distributing ring 25, the moisture-laden nitrogen passing through a filter 28 to separate material from the medium before the medium passes to atmosphere through a conduit 29. The moistened medium may be assisted in exhaustion by a jet-type vacuum device 41, and the dried material is removed from the vessel through a conduit 50 having a vacuum pump 52. In a modification the dried material, which is an insulant, passes directly to the insulating space about a storage tank. In another embodiment, granular material is dried in a continuous process wherein it passes from a hopper 71 by a gated aperture 76 to a vessel 70 through which it passes to a discharge hopper 101 by a screw conveyer 81, the material being dried during its passage by a drying medium heated in an exchanger 93 which passes to the material through a distributing ring 96 about the vessel and the moisture-laden medium passed through a filter 88, valve 90 and vacuum device 91 to atmosphere. A portion of heated medium is also passed through a conduit 99 and distributing ring 102 into the discharge hopper 101 to further dry the material and the lower portion of the periphery of the vessel is heated by a gas burner 108 to enhance the drying operation. Combustion gases pass from the exchanger 93 through a chimney 120 around the burner 108, and the combined combustion gases are exhausted through a chimney 122 to atmosphere.
