Material 2 (Fig. 1), e.g. in a mine, is loaded in succession into vehicles 6, 7, 8 forming a train, by a portable container 3 which can be driven along a roadway formed by the floors of the vehicles 6, 7, 8. In the form shown, cars 6, 7, 8 have end walls 13 hinged by rings 15 (Fig. 3), so that they can fold down, to be supported by chains 21, so that they bridge the gaps between the cars. The end wall of the forward car 8 (Fig. 1) forms a ramp 11, 12. The cars are coupled by a U-shaped member 20 (Fig. 3) engaging behind cross-members 19 at the ends of longitudinals 18. The container 3 forms part of a scooping machine which may be constructed as described in Specification 798,160. The end walls 13 of the cars are sufficiently low to permit the container 3 to be tipped over them so that the filling of each car can be completed after its end wall has been closed. The train 6, 7, 8 may run on rails, as shown, or directly on the roadway.
