Abstract

898,649. Respiratory appliances. BENGER LABORATORIES Ltd. April 15, 1959 [May 6, 1958; Nov. 28, 1958], Nos. 14396/58 and 38476/58. Class 81 (2). A powder dispenser for treating the respiratory organs has a valve controlling the injection of powder which can only be opened on inhalation. The powder is contained in a cylindrical capsule having holes for the passage of air through it and this is placed in a chamber 17 in the body 12. The walls of this chamber are grooved, as at 18, so that only a small proportion of the air blown from a bulb 10 passes through the capsule while the remainder rejoins this at the top of the capsule and causes turbulence and uniform distribution. The exit orifice 30 from the chamber 17 is normally closed by a resilient seal 45 in a piston 35, but when the user applies inhalation suction to the outlet 32, air entering a series of holes 31 raises the piston and allows the powderladen air to escape and travel through orifices 44 into the respiratory passages. Pressure on the bulb 10 alone is insufficient to raise the piston and open the valve, but, if the pressure is applied and the user then inhales, the powder is carried by the initial flow of air to the deepest recesses of the lung. The piston is preferably formed with a rim 42 so that only the lower surface of this rim is initially effective in raising the piston. This forces the user to make a strong inspiratory effort which ensures a relatively large rush of air immediately the valve opens. The valve may be held down by a light spring 46 so that the device need not always be held vertical. A simpler construction is described with reference to Fig. 6 (not shown).
