898,439. Seaming non-metallic sheet maerial ; coated fabrics. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. March 5, 1959 [March 14, 1958], No. 8335/58. Classes 42 (1) and 140. [Also in Group XXIX] A method of proofing and joining fabric comprises applying proofing material to the fabric so that it does not adhere to one or more marginal portions thereof, whereby the proofing can be folded back to expose the fabrics, joining the fabric at said margin or margins in a lap joint and then sealing the proofing over the joint, the proofing being cut back so as not to overlap. In the embodiment shown the fabric 1 is a heavy nylon fabric coated on one side with neoprene polymer proofing 2 andonthe other side with an acrylonitrile polymer 3. The proofings are applied in such a way that they do not adhere to the fabric along marginal areas 4. This may be achieved either by inserting an inert filing between the fabric and the proofing material or by omitting the anchor coat in these areas. The joint is made by sticking and/or stitching the unproofed portions 4 of the fabric together, cutting back the flaps 5 so that they do not overlap and sticking them down on the fabric. Cover strips 9 and 11 of the respective proofing materials may then be secured over the joints.
