Abstract

811,580. Seaming non-metallic sheet materials. ALEXANDER, H., and MERRONY, L. S. S. Feb. 15, 1957 [April 3, 1956], No. 10122/56. Class 42 (1). Apparatus for welding sheet thermoplastic synthetic resin comprises heated or R.F.-fed electrodes 1 and 2 and two thicknesses of non- compatible carrier material 6 and 7 between which the sheets of weldable material 8 and 9 are disposed for passage between the electrodes. The electrode 2 is shaped so that there is a regularly decreasing gap for the assembly of carrier and weldable materials to pass through in order that preheating of the materials takes place. The smallest part of the gap is chosen to give either a tear-seal weld or a simple weld, i.e. to correspond to one half of the thickness of a sheet of weldable material or to one and one half times the thickness of a sheet of weldable material. The electrodes are in the form of strips whilst the carrier material is in sheet or strip form and is transparent. One folded sheet of non-compatible material may be used as the carrier.
