An end member, i.e. a base or lid, for a carton the cross section of which has an even number of sides greater than four comprises side walls 6, ... , 13 having end flaps 15, . . . , 22 hinged thereto and extending inwardly at right angles to the walls 6, ... , 13 with alternate flaps 16, 18, 20, 22 lying outside and partially overlapping the flaps 15, 17, 19, 21 to define a central polygonal opening 28, and a locking flap 23 hinged to each of the flaps 16, 18, 20, 22 and which is folded back on its respective end flap so that the flaps 15, 17, 19, 21 are each partially sandwiched between the two end flaps adjacent thereto and their associated flaps 23. An octagonal cross-section carton comprises two end members 1, 2 made from blanks 4, 5 respectively and a tubular liner 3. To erect the end members 1, 2 each flap 14 is stapled to its corresponding wall panel 6, the flaps 15, 17, 19, 21 are folded to lie perpendicular to the wall panels 6, . . . , 13 and the flaps 16, 18, 20, 22 and their locking flaps 23 are folded about the flaps 15, 17, 19, 21. Lateral flaps 24 on the flaps 23 complete the covering of the inside faces of the flaps 15, 17, 19, 21. A separate octagonal panel (not shown) is inserted in each member 1, 2 to block the opening 28 and to hold the flaps 23 in place. In an alternate embodiment of a hexagonal section carton Fig. 6, the flaps 24 are omitted and the flaps 37, 39, 41 combine to form a continuous annular outer end surface, Fig. 9 (not shown).
